Online info session for women about PhD programmes (2023)

I will again hold an informal zoom session for women who are potentially considering pursuing a PhD in political science.

The goals of this session are:

  • to provide you with some basic information about the format of PhD programmes/positions (primarily in Europe)

  • to put you in a better position for making an informed choice.

Together with Prof. Hanne Fjelde (Uppsala University), and Prof. Emmy Lindstam (IE University in Madrid), who received her PhD from the University of Mannheim last year, we will discuss:

  • what to consider when deciding to pursue a PhD, incl. pros & cons of a PhD

  • how to look for a suitable PhD programme

and importantly try to answer your questions about pursuing a PhD in political science. Note that we will not provide information about specific funding programmes.

Date: 7th February 2023, 1-2pm CET.

Interested? -> Please email us at info4female.students@uni-mannheim.de by 3rd February and mention whether and where you are enrolled in an MA programme. We will then send you the link to the Zoom room.

New round of the "Publication Support Series"

I am organising a new round of my Publication Support Series. The first one started in April 2021 and connected a fantastic group of women broadly in peace and conflict research.

After this great experience I am issuing a call for a second instalment. This series is intended for female PhD students and early career students in Europe working broadly on empirical questions in the area of conflict, peace and human rights research. The series consists of three online workshops (April 2023, October 2023, January 2024). At the end of the series each participant should be in a position to submit an article to a peer-reviewed journal.

Interested? Check out the call for application. Deadline for applications 13 March 2023.

Sabine Carey contributes to a workshop at the German Federal Foreign Office

Prof. Carey was invited to participate in the workshop ‘PREVIEW Prediction and Early Warning Workshop’. It takes place at the German Federal Foreign Office, 29-30 January 2019. She presents an overview of the Pro-Government Militias Database and the new Militias Guidebook, and contributes to discussions on how scientists and political decision makers can better work together to improve early warning processes and outcomes.

Workshop on post-conflict peace and security

From 14-16 November we hosted a workshop on post-conflict intra-state peace and security. At this workshop we discussed early projects, including our initial findings from our surveys in Georgia, Sri Lanka and Nepal. The workshop brought together primarily young scholars from the US, Norway, Sweden, the UK and Germany. Click here for the programme.

NEW DATE!! Call for papers: Workshop on Intra-State Peace & Security, 14-16 Nov 2018

We invite paper proposals for a workshop on Intra-State Peace & Security, to be held at the University of Mannheim, now 14-16 November 2018, and organised within the ERC Project RATE No 336019.

*** The initial date included Thanksgiving. We don't want to exclude our American colleagues, so we changed the date to 14-16 November ***

At this workshop we aim to discuss ongoing research projects on intra-state peace and security, with specific focus on how political violence escalates, de-escalates, or does not escalate despite adverse conditions, such as in post-war societies. We are especially interested in work that assesses the nature and role of state institutions (including security forces) and civil society (particularly the media) in advancing or corrupting peace and the respect for human rights. We invite presentations and papers on questions such as how the role and legitimacy of the security forces and former warring parties changed in post-war settings, how institutions were modified to deal with political dissent and how citizens evaluate and trust political actors in (previously) volatile conditions.

Limited funding for travel and accommodation is available.

Please email your paper proposals to Sabine Carey by 15 July 2018.

Presentations at the workshop "Tactics in conflict"

At the workshop "Tactics in conflict" at the University of Konstanz, 27-28 July 2017, we present two of our ongoing projects. Belén González is presenting the paper "How to improve human rights in post-conflict settings: The role of accountability", co-authored with Sabine Carey. Adam Scharpf is presenting "Your behaviour drives me mad: How (non-)violent opposition tactics trigger military coups in counterinsurgency wars", co-authored with Belén González and Christian Gläßel.

Workshop on post-conflict peace and stability

On 4-5 May 2017 we host a workshop on post-conflict peace and stability at the University of Mannheim. This workshop facilitates the discussion and exchange of research projects that focus on post-conflict peace and stability. We also discuss our upcoming field work in Nepal, Georgia and Sri Lanka, where we explore the role of the media and armed groups in the quality and condition of post-conflict peace. External participants include Kristin Bakke, Scott Gates, Indra de Soysa, Alexander da Juan and Nino Abzianidze.
